No Images? Click here Hey, Adam here, following up on last week’s vague mention of a new direction for Versioning: TL:DR - In order to grow Versioning and make it much, much better, I want to do the role full-time. In order to do that, we’re not doubling down on advertising - we’re making Versioning a paid subscription product, with a free tier. But since you’re an OG subscriber, you get some time before things properly change for you. Slightly Longer; More Detail: So Versioning was something we started waaaay back in 2014. The idea was, the internet is exhausting, particularly for devs, designers and web folk like you. Why not get someone (me) to keep up with all of that stuff for you, and share the best content on a daily basis? Turns out, people (you) wanted that, so I’ve written the newsletter ever since. BUT I also have another, full-time role at SitePoint, so Versioning is squeezed in where it fits. I want to stop squeezing. Once this launches Feb 1, my entire focus will be making Versioning as useful and amazing as possible for you. I’ll have a whole day to produce every edition of Versioning, so I can do things like widen the range of sources, widen the range of topics covered based on feedback, and produce more and more varied content for y’all. The core newsletter will be there, but additional updates on specific subjects or areas can happen too. Down the line, I think the sky’s the limit. To do this, we’re partnering with a company called Substack [substack]. They’re a start-up entirely dedicated to making subscription publishing work for content producers. Btw, they’re co-founded by a New Zealander, like me, because Kiwis are amazing and we can do anything. We could’ve financed this move by adding more, and maybe more disruptive, advertising and sponsorships, but this lets the content be the focus. You’ll get stuff that’ll make your day (or your week, or your life) better, and nothing else. The way it’ll work is: For US $7/month or $70/year, you’ll be a Versioning Member, and you’ll get the new, improved daily Versioning. This will come to your inbox and will also be viewable online. No ads, better links, better commentary and additional content and products (forums, for example) where they make sense. This new Version starts Feb 1, but because you’re an OG Versioning subscriber, you’ll get that first month for free, and you'll have until March 1 to decide whether to sign up. If you’re unable to pay, no worries, I’ll still be sending a free, weekly edition (also on Substack’s platform) that I’ll make sure is amazing too. This is a new direction for us, and for newsletters in general, and it’s exciting. I look forward to the opportunity to move beyond advertising and entirely focus on the people who enjoy the content - you. I hope you join us and I look forward to working for you full-time, providing more - and better Versions - of the stuff you love! You’ll have questions, so get in touch and I’ll try provide some answers. More on this as we go, but see you again in your inbox soon! Today’s Versioning is still coming! It’ll be with you shortly.
PS: I just looked up that first Versioning edition: back then I was talking about jQuery plugins, a new version of Google Analytics, and the shock announcement of the new Star Wars films! Times have changed. |
