Hi there! This is the first edition of the new-look SitePoint Back-end Newsletter! Wherever your particular development area - PHP, Ruby, Mobile, WordPress, DevOps, Machine Learning or any of a million other areas - I really hope you enjoy the new approach we've cooked up for this newsletters. I've kept things pretty simple this time: we've got four sections: "tools", "resources", "tutorials" and "fun stuff", and they're all chock-full of good stuff from SitePoint and around the web. Hopefully there's more than one great link for you in each section, but let me know if there isn't by replying to this email. While I have you, you can jump on our other revamped email lists and get our Design/UX, Front-end, and Versioning newsletters too! They're written by me, but focused on other aspects of development and the web. I highly recommend doing that, but I may be (am) slightly biased. That's all from me, enjoy the edition! - AdamBack-end Tools(Tools, apps, frameworks and other cool stuff you can use now)First out of the gate: Hyperion-iOS [github/willowtreeapps] is an in-app iOS design tool for inspecting measurements, attributes and such. NPMGraph [npm.broofa] is a tool that’ll let you visualize npm modules’ dependencies in the browser. TokenPlex [github/proy24] is a Node/Express framework that’ll let you aggregate cryptocurrency data from the web and provide easy-to-digest endpoints. Handy if you’re building an app or service related to digital currencies, which I guess everyone is doing all the time right now! And Stacks-CLI [github/weichia] is a tool for analyzing a site’s stack from the command-line. Back-end Resources(Cool stuff that’ll make you think, give you an overview of a subject, or just teach you something useful)Falsehoods programmers believe about programming [sicpers]. A guide to starting with webpack from scratch [netlify]. An intro to Turbo [medium/@ericsimons], an npm client that’s 5x faster than Yarn and npm. Meet ReasonML, Facebook’s new programming language [2ality]. Some best practices for microservice architecture [codingsans]. Tutorials(Learn while you produce a real thing)Part 1 of a guide to making sure your web app works offline [css-tricks]. This one’s more of a case study: Optimizing CommonMark Markdown Parser with Blackfire.io [sitepoint] And a step-by-step guide to modeling a neural network for classification [franpapers]. Fun stuffFun stuffHow to handle the inevitable family tech support [thesweetsetup] you’ll find yourself hit with these holidays. The A to Z of Raspberry Pi [github/wtsxDev]. Lastly, Kleptocrat [kleptocrat] is a smartphone game where, as a corrupt politician, you have to hide your money from investigation. Useful training for some, I guess! That's all from me - I'll be back with more good stuff for ya next week! - Adam 👋 |
