Vue vs React

The battle over which JavaScript framework offers the best set of tools continues unabated. In recent weeks Vue has overtaken React as the most popular framework, but popular doesn't necessarily mean best. Sunil Sandhu builds identical apps in both frameworks and reports his findings in this objective analysis.

Tempo Email

Email can be one of the biggest productivity drains on your day. Tempo Email is a brand new app, currently in beta, that helps you zero your inbox efficiently. It features snooze; later; and archive options, 140 character quick replies, and one-click unsubscribes, all packaged in a beautifully minimal UI that you'll love using.

Digital Psychology

User experience relies heavily on psychology, but how many of us really understand the rules that govern visitor behaviour? Digital Psychology is an invaluable collection of principles explained in plain English, covering everything you need to know to design for users, from anchoring to loss aversion, from scarcity to social proof.

20 Best New Portfolios

This month our roundup of the best portfolios posted by designers features a return to color. Designers are embracing all manner of hues, with primary colors and gradients taking the lead. Fans of minimalism won't be disappointed either, there's plenty of simplicity on display. Grab a coffee and soak up some inspiration.

The Cost of JavaScript in 2018

JavaScript is part of the holy trinity of web design (along with HTML, and CSS) but it is a costly addition. For low-end mobile devices the addition of JavaScript can make the user experience of a site unwieldy. Addy Osmani looks at the true cost of JS in our sites, and offers some tested techniques for reducing drag.

Sour Grapes

If you run a business with a social media presence, you'll know how difficult it is to keep trolls under control. Some customers, and even non-customers, seem to delight in running down a business for their own amusement. Sour Grapes uses NLP and AI to root out negative Facebook comments so you don't have to.

UI Pattern Hub

UI Pattern Hub is a collection of user interface patterns presented in abstract, for inspiration, and to help designers learn good design principles. Dozens of examples cover everything from testimonials to search results. Click on an example to see the abstract alongside the real artwork from sites ranging from LinkedIn to Gaana.

Emojicom

Soliciting user feedback offers insights that analytics alone can't deliver, but users rarely take the time to give you their opinion. Emojicom is seeking to change that by collecting views in a fun way—clickable emoji. How can you fail to appreciate feedback in the form of a thumbs up, or heaven forfend, a poop emoji.

Building Fluid Interfaces

A fluid UI feels natural; all of the interactions react instantly to user input, can be stopped at any time, and can even be reversed mid-way. The concept was presented at this year's Apple WWDC, and in this practical examination Nathan Gitter looks at implementing the approach with real-world code examples.
