The Definition of UX

We've been arguing over the precise definition of user experience for years. It's come to be an all-encompassing term for any design process. In this great video Don Norman of the Nielsen Norman Group debunks that notion, and describes the origins of the term coined at Apple in the early 90s.

IC Project

Managing teams working on client projects is perhaps the most challenging aspect of the design process. IC Project is an ambitious SaaS that aims to combine the features of Asana, Jira, Basecamp, CRMs, and Slack into a single project dashboard. Flexible, robust, and thoughtfully designed; best of all, the startup plan is free.

Adobe Pelago

The Adobe type design team, headed by Robert Slimbach, has released Pelago, a beautiful sans-serif typeface. Humanist in nature—meaning it is drawn, rather than constructed—the letterforms are highly readable at small sizes, and at larger sizes reveal an expressive and contemporary aesthetic.

Firefox's Superfast CSS Engine

All browsers have a CSS engine, responsible for telling the browser how to render CSS rules. As part of Project Quantum, Firefox's CSS engine—Quantum CSS—has just been made available in the nightly release ahead of a full browser implementation. It makes use of all of your machine's processing power and renders CSS up to 18 times faster.

Product Graveyard

It's commonly accepted that mistakes can be productive if you learn from them, but why learn from your own mistakes when you can learn from someone else's. Product Graveyard is a fantastic repository of products that have gone the way of the dinosaur, from Vine to Fireworks, with a breakdown of just why they failed.

How to Build a Better Website

What's the secret of a truly effective website? Planning. That's the argument in this in-depth essay by Daniel Davidson, in which he discusses the opportunities and the pitfalls of the research and strategy phase of a website design project. Essential reading for anyone about to begin designing, or coding, a website.

Eclipse Megamovie

This week, in case you missed it, the Moon obscured the Sun in parts of North America. Constant coverage across social media showed just how impressive a spectacle it was. For anyone who wasn't lucky enough to be inside the path of totality, Google and UC Berkeley have collaborated to crowdsource thousands of images, which they're building into an "Eclipse Megamovie".

Android Oreo

Android have officially released Android 8.0, named "Oreo". It's fast and powerful, with new features and a security upgrade. You'll also find a ton of freshly designed emojis. Android updates are being pushed out globally, and most Android users should see the new OS on their devices in the next few months.

Stopping Online Harassment

Online communities are frequently targeted by trolls, and worse. From threats, to abuse, Kite AI claim that over 60% have experienced online harassment and 25% have disconnected as a result; to tackle this they've built an abuse-detection API. If you run any kind of community site, it's a great way to leverage AI to keep your users safe.
