YouTube gives viewers the ability to skip messages that don't resonate with them, so some brands are working harder to communicate their message more quickly. Just like movie trailers whet your appetite for a feature film, we're seeing advertisers front-load videos with mini-trailers that build hype for the main ad. This can mean a quick summary, introducing the main message or even highlighting a famous face. The purpose is to rapidly tee up content and offer a brief explanation. As a Creative Effectiveness Lead at Google, I've seen these mini-trailers act as qualifiers for engaged views, and it's starting to pick up in longer-form ads across a variety of industries. Advertisers hope that "mini" introductions engage some people who might've otherwise skipped. Even if they skip, data shows they'll leave with a better understanding of the story than they would've with a more traditional opening.

YouTube Ads Leaderboard: The Best of July

YouTube Ads Leaderboard: The Best of July

The numbers have been tallied, and this month a couple of the Ads Leaderboard winners had a common theme—inclusivity. In its first Ads Leaderboard appearance, Converse teams up with Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown to encourage women to wear whatever makes them feel comfortable, while another first-timer, Bonobos, expands the definition of masculinity. In contrast to these spots, there are also some funny ads on the list. Old Spice made it to the Ads Leaderboard for the first time in three years with a silly crash landing. In Tinder's first spot on the Ads Leaderboard, J.Lo's Tinder Takeover provides some witty dating advice. Finally, in a tug-at-your-heartstrings ad, Samsung shows how its products help bring families together.

You know the old saying "try before you buy?" Well, what do you think about letting other people try for you? In "Does it Work?" videos, creators test a product and offer their honest opinion. These videos have become so popular that their watchtime has grown by more than 1,100% over the past two years (Source: YouTube Data, US, January - June 2015 & 2017). Consider them to be 21st-century infomercials that you can search for any time. In this episode of "View in 2," we discuss why this new style of product reviews is thriving.
