Small Pictures on Big Screens: Scaling Up from Mobile to Desktop

If an image works well on a small screen, think about how it will grow and shift to fill the space on a larger monitor. Consider relative screen space and information density, paying close attention to cropping, scaling and proportions. Show more things, not just bigger things. (6 min. to read)

Homepage Links Remain a Necessity

A site logo linking to the homepage is not enough. Logo design and placement, as well as the presence of a text link to the homepage affect success of navigation to homepage. (4 min. to read)

Analytics vs. Quant Usability Testing Now in Spanish

Last week’s video on Analytics vs. Quantitative Usability Testing is now available with Spanish subtitles, curtesy of a loyal reader (“Analítica Web vs Estudio Cuantitativo de Usabilidad”).

(To show subtitles, click the “CC” icon in the lower right of the video. To change language, if the default isn’t to your liking, click the gear icon and select from the menu of choices.)

Spread the UX Word in Your Country

If you live in a non-English speaking country, you can help promote UX in your country by adding translated subtitles to your favorite videos. Since most videos only run for 2 minutes, such translations are quick to produce, especially since you can work from an almost-good-enough machine-translated draft provided by the system.

YouTube has a personalized list of videos it thinks you should translate. If the system guesses wrong about your native language or if there are other videos you prefer to translate, you can do so manually:

  1. Go to the video you do want to translate
  2. Click the gear icon and select the subtitles menu
  3. Click “Add subtitles/CC”
  4. Specify the language you want to add, and (my advice) ask for the autotranslated text as a starting point
