Meet Kactus

Kactus is an awesome new tool that enables version control for design files without asking you to change your tools. It features all the benefits of Git, but with a simple UI. You can manage files, document your work, and keep your whole team up to speed. If you're a designer who names files "*_final", "*_final2", "*_finalfinal", "*_finalfriday"—you know who you are—then Kactus could be the tool for you.

Project Common Voice

Voice APIs, the kind that will power the next generation of device, depend on speech recognition. The problem is, few samples mean those with speech impediments, or even strong accents, could become disenfranchized. Mozilla's Project Common Voice seeks to address that by sampling your voice to help create an open source voice recognition API. So you can say po-tay-to, and I can say po-taa-to and no one has to call anything off.

You're Not a Bridge Builder

Clients will always ask you to make an exception for them, and you might be tempted, but you mustn't; making exceptions for individual users leads to poor product design. "No" may be in your best interests, because by not building temporary solutions for one client, you can build a good solution for all of them. That's the message from this great article by Nate Munger on the Intercom blog.

Flow Typeface

Flow is a free typeface designed by Dan Ross. Unlike most typefaces, it's not intended to be readable, in fact it's intended not to be. Flow is a typeface built for wireframing, so it allows you to use dummy text, without the prejudices that dummy text brings. Flow consists of a series of dashes only, meaning you can add Lorem Ipsum to your wireframes without getting distracted by text. It even comes in three weights: circular, rounded, and block.

The Shape of Design

Designlab looks at four lessons that can be learnt from designer, writer, and illustrator Frank Chimero. Based on Chimero's "The Shape of Design", lessons include asking why as well as how, the functionality of beauty, letting the user contribute, and the all-encompassing nature of UX design. This articulate summary of Chimero's views is a great introduction to his design philosophy.

How to Raise $1400 Million

If you've got a great idea for a startup and you'd like to attract funding then you'll need a pitch-deck. A good pitch-deck supports your presentation to potential investors and done well, could secure your future. This inspiring collection posted by Dconstrct features over 40 pitch decks from successful startups including AirBnB, Intercom, and BuzzFeed, together with details of how much they raised and from whom.

Box UI Elements

Box UI Elements are a set of modular components that you can use to build web and mobile apps. Brought to you free from the team that built the Box platform, they are easy to use, fully customizable using CSS, and designed to maximize your app's performance.

Rules for Working with AI

Everyone seems a little afraid of where AI is heading, from Elon Musk to Steven Hawking, experts are warning us of the dangers of AI. In this in-depth article Katharine Schwab examines Google's approach to working with AI in a human-centered way. Google is aiming to create AI that enables the best of us, and doesn't accentuate the worst of human nature. It's a discussion all tech companies need to have.

macOs Wallpapers in 5k

Every version of macOS has shipped with a default wallpaper. From v10's Cheetah to 10.4's Tiger the wallpapers were abstract, 10.5 Leopard through 10.8 Mountain Lion gave us the galaxy, 10.10 Yosemite to the latest 10.13 High Sierra gave us mountains. This great collection makes them all available to download at 5k resolution. Our favourite is still 10.9 Mavericks, it's great to see that wave again.
