Social VR Takes a Step Closer

VR is immersive, exciting, and often solitary. While you're spinning on the spot swiping at zombies, or exploring the wonders of the Louvre, your friends are sat on the sofa staring at your gyrating posterior. WeLens is an awesome startup that lets you experience VR in a group. Watch movies with friends, deliver pitches to boardrooms, or travel to the furthest corners of the earth as a group. WeLens will even rent the VR gear to you.

Meet Inkwell, the Comic Sans Killer

Hoefler & Co have released Inkwell, a handwritten typeface that includes serif, sans, script, blackletter, open, and tuscan—which is particularly attractive—styles. There are the inevitable comparisons Comic Sans, because Inkwell's equally laid-back and hand-drawn. However Inkwell is far more legible, with greater variety, and far more charm than every designer's most despised typeface. The only downside? Comic Sans is available free, Inkwell…isn't.

Happy Birthday CSS-Tricks

Every Fourth of July CSS-Tricks has an extra reason to celebrate, because it's the site's birthday. This year was particularly special because the site reached double-figures. That's right, CSS-Tricks has now been running for over a decade. Do you remember the state of web design way back in 2007, before CSS Flexbox was a glint in the W3C's eye? Congrats to the team and here's to another ten years!

Remote Whiteboarding for Teams

Deekit is an awesome cloud-based whiteboard that enables remote collaboration for teams. There are hundreds of design elements to add at the tap of a finger; you can embed photos and videos, or text documents; you can even manage user privileges to ensure that only those teams members and clients that you want to share with, can see the virtual whiteboard. Now if only someone would invent remote post-it notes.

Facebook Just Got Creepier

It's a rare person that's comfortable with Facebook deep-diving into their personal data. Facebook is one of a number of tech giants that have a poor reputation when it comes to respecting users' personal space. So anyone who has a Facebook account may be concerned to learn that ad targeting will now be based on whole households. Thinking of proposing to your girlfriend? Facebook is probably already showing her adverts for diamond rings and Honeymoon destinations.

Redacted for iOS

Redacted is a great app that allows you to obscure parts of an image by tapping and dragging. Want to share a photo but hide your kids' faces? Want to share one line of a bank statement without sharing your whole account? Want to post a selfie to social media but want to remove your ex? Redacted gives you three options for obscuring sensitive data and a quick copy and paste workflow to get images shared quickly.

Are Gradients the New Colors?

Probably not, no. But Gal Shir raises an interesting point with this snappy blog post. Gradients are certainly everywhere in UI design, and this quick read explores some of the reasons that they're so popular. After a few years of austere flat design it's a relief to see more interesting design elements creeping back into our vocabulary.

Find An API, Build Something…

apilist.fun is a fantastic list of APIs curated by Adam Hodara. Organized alphabetically, hover over an API to discover what it enables you to do. You can arrange the APIs by grid or list; the list version discloses the purpose of the API, but the grid version requires mouse over to reveal its purpose. We'd encourage you to leave the site in grid mode and rollover boxes until you feel inspired, then, as the sites says: Build something…

Is Your Cat Plotting to Kill You?

Anyone who freelances from home will appreciate the company of a feline companion. Cats are a great stress-reducer, even when they are sleeping on your keyboard, or attacking the cursor on your screen. But are they really so fluffy? This hilarious app, free to download from the iTunes store, will take just 10 questions to determine if Mr. Whiskers has murderous intentions…you may be surprised with what you learn.
